A miniature spotlight fitting onto a magnetic rail does not, by itself, establish compatibility. The mechanical fit and the electrical specification are separate checks. A useful purchasing record identifies the luminaire, rail, power supply and connection components together.
Start with the exact model references
Keep the supplier's model number and the approved configuration for each cabinet. A photograph is helpful for an initial enquiry, but small differences in a base or rail may be difficult to identify from an overall image.
For replacement enquiries, photograph the product label, rail end profile, contact arrangement and existing power supply label. Include a dimensioned sketch when the original model reference is missing.
Check the mechanical interface
- Track profile: check width, depth, opening and mounting arrangement.
- Luminaire base: confirm how it seats and is retained in the track.
- Contacts: compare their position, spacing and connection arrangement.
- Joining components: distinguish a mechanical join from a component that also carries power.
A connector that aligns two rails is not necessarily an electrical feed. Ask what function the exact component performs and whether additional wiring or a separate feed is required.
Check the electrical interface before energising
Compare the luminaire's rated input with the approved system supply. Confirm output type, rated voltage, polarity and any specified control arrangement. A rail that looks similar is not evidence that a 12V luminaire belongs in a 24V configuration.
Do not connect an uncertain combination to see whether it works. Have the exact configuration checked against its product documents. Mains-side work and local installation requirements should be confirmed by the project installer.
Keep a compact compatibility record
- Cabinet or project reference.
- Luminaire model and selected options.
- Approved rail model, profile and lengths.
- Power supply model and rated output.
- Feed, joining components and control details.
- Drawing revision and sample approval date.
When one component changes, review the matching items again. This is particularly useful when a later order combines original stock with a newer product revision.
Questions to ask before ordering
Can magnetic lights be mixed between brands?
Only use a combination supported by the exact product specifications and an appropriate configuration review. Magnetic attachment, a similar name or a shared nominal voltage is not enough.
Can I order a connector from its shape alone?
Send the existing rail model, dimensions and contact information. Its function and compatibility need to be established, even when two connectors look alike.
